The Flowers Are Coming!

Summer is great and one (more) reason is because of the flowers. Sure the flowers in the yard are wonderful, but even better are the flowers on the pumpkins! (Check out the new flower in the center of this plant.) In the last week we've gone from three blossoms on neighboring plants in the eastern most row, to dozens across the entire patch.

Our neons are clearly ahead of the baby bears. We added fertilizer two weeks ago -- perfectly timed (of course we planned it this way) before nearly an inch of gentle rain. The plants have gone from a pale green to nearly a forest green. Then last week, we added nearly four inches of rich, well-aged mulch.

What I'm really trying to say is we added wonderfully stinky manure to the rows between the pumpkins. I think their roots must be reaching down and grabbing some of the new-found "nutrients" because their growth truly is impressive.

Impressive enough to make this Papa proud of his "pick yer own patch."

Let's talk again soon,

Papa
